SUMMARY:Plants and Algae in the Frequency Domain - Summer School and Workshop
DESCRIPTION:For the most up to date and accurate information please visit the event website. \nPlants and Algae in the Frequency Domain\nSummer School and Workshop\nČeský Krumlov\, Czech Republic\nAug.25-29\, 2025 \nDREAM\nThe Summer School and\, in part\, the Workshop will be funded by HORIZON-EIC-2021PATHFINDER OPEN project DREAM\, grant agreement no. 101046451 \n“Bringing precision agriculture to the next generation:\nDynamic regulation of photosynthesis in light-acclimated organisms” \nInvitation\nAlternating electric currents and alternating electromagnetic fields revolutionized physics and engineering and led to many technologies that shape modern life. Despite these undisputable achievements\, which have been reached using stimulation by harmonic oscillations over centuries\, applications in biology remain rare. \nPhotosynthesis research is uniquely suited to unleash this potential because light can be periodically modulated like currents or fields in physics. Implementing\, exploiting\, and understanding the response of photosynthetic organisms to periodically modulated light is hindered by the complexity of dynamics that such light elicits and by the mathematical apparatus required for understanding the signals in the frequency domain\, which\, although well-established and straightforward\, is outside typical curricula in biology. \nThe Workshop will consist of sessions dedicated to: \n\n\nIntroduction to photosynthesis sensing in the frequency domain. \n\n\nIs the information obtained in the frequency domain equivalent or complementary to the time domain methods? \n\n\nOpportunities for instruments tailored to the frequency domain compared to instruments originally developed only for time-domain measurements. \n\n\nCan the light-use efficiency of plants and algae in harmonically modulated light exceed that in constant light of the same average photon flux density? \n\n\nCan measurements in the frequency domain yield a higher discriminative power than the time domain in sensing plant stress? \n\n\nDynamics and mechanisms of non-photochemical quenching in oscillating and fluctuating light. \n\n\nThe Summer School will offer junior researchers an introduction to the theoretical and methodological fundamentals required to understand plants’ and algae’s dynamic responses to oscillating and fluctuating light. The introductory session will be elemental and accessible to students of diverse backgrounds\, but a willingness to explore the wonderful mathematical tools supporting the approach will be assumed. The Summer School will be organized into five lectures\, each of two hours. The summer school sessions will be held in the early afternoons\, allowing students to participate in the workshop sessions in the mornings and late afternoons. The first lecture will introduce the principles of the frequency-domain approach. The subsequent three lectures will be on using already available DREAM-developed\, commercial\, and DIY instruments. Some instruments will be available on-site for inspection and discussions between the students and developers. The last session will be dedicated to data analysis and databases for storing and exploiting the results obtained in the frequency domain. \nOrganizers and contributors (a preliminary list)\nBAILLEUL\, Benjamin Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique/CNRS/Sorbonne Université\, Paris\, France\nHOLZWARTH\, Alfred Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam\, The Netherlands\nJULLIEN\, Ludovic ENS/Université PSL/Sorbonne Université/CNRS\, Paris\, France\nKRAMER\, David Jan IngenHousz Institute\, Wageningen\, The Netherlands\nLAZÁR\, Dušan Palacký University\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic\nMATSUBARA\, Shizue Forschungszentrum Jülich\, Germany\nNEDBAL\, Ladislav Palacký University\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic\nRASCHER\, Uwe Forschungszentrum Jülich\, Germany \nOrganizing Committee of the Summer School:\nCOGHILL\, Ian ENS/Université PSL/Sorbonne Université/CNRS\, Paris\, France\nCOLLIAUX\, David SONY ICL\, Paris\, France\nFUENTE\, David Palacký University\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic\nLAHLOU\, Aliénor SONY ICL\, Paris\, France\nLODETTI\, Andrea Forschungszentrum Jülich\, Germany\nNIU\, Yuxi Wageningen University\, The Netherlands\nORLANDO\, Marcelo Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique\, CNRS\, Sorbonne Université\, Paris\, France \nLocal organizers:\nLadislav NEDBAL (nedbal.lad@gmail.com)\, Dušan LAZÁR\, Palacký University\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic\nMichela SOLARI\, Michela CANDOTTI\, InSociety\, Udine\, Italy\nRobert DULFER\, Palacký University\, Olomouc\, Czech Republic \nVenue\nČeský Krumlov is a unique gem of Renaissance and Baroque architecture recognized as UNESCO World Heritage. SUMMARY:International Conference on Photosynthesis Research: ICPR2026
DESCRIPTION:The Association of Applied Biologists is delighted to bring ICPR2026 to Liverpool in the UK. \nThe study of photosynthesis has attracted the attention of successive legions of biologists\, biochemists\, chemists and physicists for over 200 years. Never in the history of photosynthesis research\, however\, has progress in our understanding of photosynthetic mechanisms\, regulation and improvement been made as rapidly as it has over the past 5 years. Nature makes photosynthesis look easy\, but the construction of artificial photosynthetic systems remains challenging. Substantial efforts to improve the efficiency and productivity of photosynthesis have the potential to increase crop yields without further increasing fertilizer and water use. \nMoreover\, tailoring photosynthesis to meet the needs of nature-based solutions to climate change and to the sustainability of food production remain global challenges that have to be addressed by the photosynthesis community. This meeting will galvanise participants from academia and industry to translate this new mechanistic understanding of photosynthetic function into improved crop production and more efficient terrestrial carbon sinks. \nFor more detailed information regarding the program and registration please visit the conference website.

SUMMARY:34th Western Photosynthesis Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Western Photosynthesis Conference (WPC) is one of three regional photosynthesis meetings that occur annually in the United States. A primary thrust of the WPC is to bring together researchers from a wide range of disciplines including chemistry\, biochemistry\, biology\, and biophysics to share their cutting-edge research results in the study of photosynthetic processes. Importantly\, the regional meetings are focused on the inclusion\, participation and development of early career scholars. Smaller regional meetings such as the WPC fulfill an important need in terms of fostering opportunities for high-level discourse by the field’s younger scientists. The WPC is focused on both fundamental and applied research that is directly related to the biological transformation of solar photons to high-energy chemical bonds. In addition to strictly biological processes\, a portion of the WPC is focused on research into bio-inspired “artificial photosynthesis”. Mechanisms of light harvesting\, charge separation\, CO2 fixation and electron transfer are longstanding foci of the WPC. This year\, the WPC aims to highlight eight research areas: \n\nLight Stress Management\nStructure-function relations in photosynthesis\nCellular and Molecular Biology of Photosynthesis\nElectron transfer between photosynthetic complexes\nApplied Photosynthesis\nPhotosynthesis at the Global/Ecosystem Scale\nEvolution and Diversity of Photosynthesis \nCarbon metabolism and Photorespiration\n\nSee more information at https://utconferences.eventsair.com/wpc-2025/.
