Rewiring Photosynthesis with Synthetic Biology for Cyanobacterial and Plant Biotechnology

We are looking for a Research Fellow to join a BBSRC-funded project to work toward developing the biotechnological potential of cyanobacteria and plants. We want to recruit a highly skilled individual to provide research leadership and coordination of this project within the context of the wider research group.

Photosynthetic species offer great potential as systems to produce a range of high-value fuels and products from ‘light-energy’. This project aims to re-engineer the fundamental photosynthetic reactions to realise this potential in cyanobacteria and plants by developing the approach of Berepiki et al (2016, 2018).

The candidate will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualification in relevant subject as well as demonstrable skills in advanced molecular biology techniques, including generation of knockout mutations and gene expression analysis.

Knowledge or experience in photosynthetic physiology, synthetic biology, plant biology and/or bioinformatics will be advantageous.

The candidate will work at the National Oceanography Centre in Ocean and Earth Sciences and join an active group studying the role of photosynthetic species in global systems and for biotechnological applications.

This is a full time fixed term post for 18 months starting October 2019.

*Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification. The title of Research Fellow will be applied upon successful completion of the PhD. Prior to the qualification being awarded the title of Senior Research Assistant will be given.
